Special Issue on Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa

The Guest Editors of the special issue on Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa are pleased to invite contributors to the special online workshop in respect to this Special Issue on 31 March 2023. 

The virtual workshop is aimed at prospective contributors and academics who have an interest on the topical issues the special issue seeks to address. This Special Issue seeks to understand the history and legacy of accounting and accounting systems in the development of enterprise and society in Africa. It directs attention to all traditions of accounting through the long history of African indigenous economies and cultures. The full call for papers is available here. 

Those wishing to present their ongoing work at the workshop should reach out to the Guest Editors: Professor Grietjie Verhoef (gverhoef@uj.ac.za) and Dr Olayinka Moses (yinka.moses@vuw.ac.nz) with a proposal or an extended abstract of the intended paper by Friday, 10 March 2023. 

Workshop submission guideline: 

  • The proposal/extended abstracts for consideration should clearly identify:
    • purpose of the research 
    • research design including theoretical framework and contextual focus/data of the study. 
    • research method and expected results 
    • intended contribution(s) of study and how it aligns with the special issue.

The AFAANZ Accounting History SIG will advise separately about the upcoming SIG symposium.

CfP: Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa

We are pleased to announce that the Call for Papers on the theme “Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa” which is to be guest edited by Professor Grietjie Verhoef and Dr Olayinka Moses. Accounting systems and institutions significantly influence the development of enterprise and society. Our understanding of these systems often omits the subtleties of difference, complexity, and contestation in Africa. Early interaction with markets outside Africa developed dynamically from the eighth century and with subsequent expeditions from metropolitan Europe and Asia. African societies through engagement with the global systems have facilitated different trajectories for market integration, and social development in their quest for independent statehood and post-colonial control. Owing to its evolution across enterprise and society, including engagements with global markets, and institutions, Africa has gained scholarly traction. Yet, the role of accounting and accounting systems in Africa’s societies and economies, but equally so in Africa’s engagement with international markets and the wider world, remains inadequately explored. This Special Issue seeks to understand the history and legacy of accounting and accounting systems in the development of enterprise and society in Africa. It directs attention to all traditions of accounting through the long history of African indigenous economies and cultures.

Author(s) are encouraged to submit their papers for peer review, with the final date for submission of papers to the special issue being 30 September 2023. Potential contributors are welcome to contact the Guest Editors to discuss their proposed topics at: Grietjie Verhoef (gverhoef@uj.ac.za) and Olayinka Moses (yinka.moses@vuw.ac.nz)

17th Accounting History Symposium

Accounting History Special Interest Group (AFAANZ) logo

Dear Accounting History community members, 

The Accounting History Special Interest Group of AFAANZ is pleased to announce that the 17th Accounting History Symposium will be held fully online on July 2, 2022 in the morning (AEST).

The event will be free of charge for the AH-SIG members.

A fee of AUD$15 will be charged for non-members (including non-AFAANZ members).

As per our tradition, part of the event will be dedicated to research proposal presentations by accounting history scholars.

You are welcome to submit your research proposal according to the attached call for research proposals for the 17th Accounting History Symposium.

Feel also free to pass on this call to other interested colleagues and PhD students.

EoI for hosting 12th Accounting History in 2024

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to call for expressions of interest in hosting the Twelfth Accounting History International Conference in 2024.

This expression of interest should be accompanied by a proposal that includes:

  • The proposed dates of the conference – generally August or early September
  • Conference venue (with pictures)
  • Information on rooms for plenary speakers and concurrent sessions
  • Planned key dates
  • Names of the local organising committee and designated chair
  • Letter of support from the Head of School/Department agreeing to host the conference

This proposal will then be taken to the Accounting History Special Interest Group AGM in late June or early July 2022 for discussion and a host university or universities decided on.

Please send your expression of interest to Carolyn Fowler (carolyn.fowler@vuw.ac.nz) by 17 June 2022.

Accounting History International Emerging Scholars’ Colloquium

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to confirm that the Accounting History International Emerging Scholars’ Colloquium (AHIESC) will be held as part of the 11AHIC on 7 September 2022. Individuals who wish to express an interest in attending the AHIESC can still forward their research proposals, brief biographical details, and a CV to Carolyn Fowler no later than 31 May 2022 at the following address: carolyn.fowler@vuw.ac.nz. 

A panel of experienced accounting history scholars will comment on the formal presentations made by each participant and offer constructive advice and encouragement to all presenters. The following senior faculty members have been confirmed for the AHIESC panel:

  • Carolyn Cordery, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
  • Karen McBride, University of Portsmouth, UK
  • Christopher Napier, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK
  • Luca Zan, Università di Bologna, Italy

Research proposals of no more than six pages (double-spaced) should contain the following information:    

1. Project (working) title.  

2. Background to the study (or scenario for investigation).

3. Main research objective to be stated in a single, concise sentence.  

4. Concise statement of key research question(s). 

5. Research methodology. 

6. Period selection.  

7. Limitations of the study.

8. Expected (original) contribution of the study to the literature. 

9. List of no more than 12 key references relating to the proposed study.    

Formal invitations to attend the Colloquium will be issued on receipt and review of research proposals.

11th Accounting History International Conference

Dear Colleagues,

The Eleventh Accounting History International Conference (11AHIC) is being held in Portsmouth, UK from 7 – 9 September 2022 with the theme of ‘How does accounting shape the past, present and future of society?’. This is hosted by the School of Business and Law, University of Portsmouth, and supported by the Accounting History SIG of AFAANZ and the journal. 

There is a prospect of some sessions being conducted online for those who are unable to travel due to restrictions.

Thanks to all of you that have submitted papers for the conference. We plan to have a decision regarding submissions to you by the end of May. If you did not get your submission in on time, and still wish to submit a paper, please contact Carolyn Fowler (carolyn.fowler@vuw.ac.nz).

The following plenary speakers have been confirmed for the conference:

  • Professor Grietjie Verhoef, University of Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Professor Luca Zan, Università di Bologna, Italy

After receiving requests asking us to do so we have decided to extend the due date for paper submissions for the 11AHIC as well as the AHIESC to 31 March 2022 (previously 1 March 2022).

The Eleventh Accounting History International Conference (11AHIC) is to be held in Portsmouth, UK from 7 – 9 September 2022 with the theme of “How does accounting shape the past, present and future of society?”. Submission of papers should be submitted in Word format no later than 31 March 2022 to https://www.conftool.org/11ahic/ . A special issue of the journal on the conference theme is scheduled to be published following the event and the call for papers will follow.
