The 12th Accounting History International Conference will be held September 4-6 2024 in Siena, Italy. The conference theme is “Accounting for arts, culture and heritage in historical perspectives”. Papers on this topic are encouraged, but any accounting history paper will be considered for presentation at the 12AHIC. Paper submission is by 31 March 2024.

SAGE Publications has established a new Editors’ Choice Collection for Accounting History on the theme “Women and Accounting’s Past”. Following the great success of the 18th Accounting History Symposium, held on Wednesday 7th December 2022, the Accounting History Special Interest Group (AHSIG) is pleased to announce the first event of 2023. The 19th Accounting History Symposium will be held on 1st July 2023 at the Star on Gold Coast, Australia. Associate Professor Carolyn Fowler of Victoria University of Wellington will be the guest speaker for the symposium. Carolyn is the joint editor of the Accounting History Journal and will give a talk about writing for and publishing in the Accounting History Journal. She will provide valuable insights and a behind-the-scenes overview of the process, the timing, and key points to enhance the quality of manuscripts. We are delighted to have Carolyn as the 19th Accounting History Symposium guest speaker in 2023.
In addition to the guest speaker, individuals interested in making a presentation about a planned or existing research project are invited to submit a research proposal (of no more than three pages, single-spaced) containing the following information:
1. Project (working) title
2. Background (or scenario for investigation)
3. Main research objective in one sentence
4. Concise key research question(s)
5. Research methodology
6. Period selection
7. Limitations of the study
8. Expected (original) contribution.
The due date for submission of research proposals is Friday, 19 May 2023, and should be sent to

In addition to the presentations of research proposals relating to accounting history, a panel of scholars will be in attendance, discussing and/or providing feedback on the presentations of the participants.

The 2022 Robert W. Gibson Manuscript Award was awarded to Lee Moerman and Sandy van der Laan for their article ‘Accounting for and accounts of death: Past, present and future possibilities’ which was published in volume 27, issue 1 of Accounting History.
The award is presented to the author(s) of the article published during the year “which makes the most significant contribution to the accounting history literature”. The Guest Editors of the special issue on Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa are pleased to invite contributors to the special online workshop in respect to this Special Issue on 31 March 2023.
The virtual workshop is aimed at prospective contributors and academics who have an interest on the topical issues the special issue seeks to address. This Special Issue seeks to understand the history and legacy of accounting and accounting systems in the development of enterprise and society in Africa. It directs attention to all traditions of accounting through the long history of African indigenous economies and cultures. The full call for papers is available here.

Dear colleagues,
the DATAREV project team is hiring a new Postdoc to work on accounting as innovation in European agriculture. This position could be of interest for you or you may know someone interested.
It is a one year position (possibly renewable for one more year) at the Institute for Economic and Social History of the University of Vienna.
The DATAREV project is funded by the European Research Council and investigates accounting and book-keeping practices in agriculture. It’s an ambitious project drawing on a variety of approaches: economic history, business history, social history and the history of science and technology.
Successful applicants will work on the topic of accounting as innovation broadly defined, and will be responsible for DATAREV subproject 3 (as defined here: https://datarev.univie.ac.at/about-the-project/sub-projects/).
We welcome applications from young scholars (up to four years after their thesis defense) with a background in economic history, business history, social history and the history of science and technology (including the history of economics).
The deadline for applications is Sunday, 11th December 2022. The application package should contain: a letter of motivation, a cv including a list of publications, the name and email addresses of at least two referees and a research proposal connected with DATAREV subproject 3.
No previous knowledge of German is required.
The starting date is flexible.

We are pleased to announce that the Call for Papers on the theme “Historical Accounting for Enterprise and Society in Africa” which is to be guest edited by Professor Grietjie Verhoef and Dr Olayinka Moses. Accounting systems and institutions significantly influence the development of enterprise and society. Our understanding of these systems often omits the subtleties of difference, complexity, and contestation in Africa. Early interaction with markets outside Africa developed dynamically from the eighth century and with subsequent expeditions from metropolitan Europe and Asia. African societies through engagement with the global systems have facilitated different trajectories for market integration, and social development in their quest for independent statehood and post-colonial control. Owing to its evolution across enterprise and society, including engagements with global markets, and institutions, Africa has gained scholarly traction. Yet, the role of accounting and accounting systems in Africa’s societies and economies, but equally so in Africa’s engagement with international markets and the wider world, remains inadequately explored. This Special Issue seeks to understand the history and legacy of accounting and accounting systems in the development of enterprise and society in Africa. It directs attention to all traditions of accounting through the long history of African indigenous economies and cultures.
Author(s) are encouraged to submit their papers for peer review, with the final date for submission of papers to the special issue being 30 September 2023.
