New editors for BJM and IJMR

Our two journals – the British Journal of Management (BJM) and International Journal of Management Reviews (IJMR) – continue to go from strength to strength, rising in impact factors and rankings as well as in the number of submissions being received. We are investing further in our journals to provide additional support for the wonderful teams of Editors that work so hard to provide high quality outlets for research. So we are seeking to recruit the following roles:

  1. An additional Co-Editor in Chief for IJMR, to work with the current Editors in Chief, Dr Dermot Breslin and Professor Katie Bailey. 
  2. An additional Associate Editor, ideally with a specialism in information systems and perhaps based in North America, to join the team on IJMR.
  3. Four additional Associate Editors for BJM.

About the Journal

Business History is an international journal concerned with the long-run evolution and contemporary operation of business systems and enterprises. Its primary purpose is to make available the findings of advanced research, empirical and conceptual, into matters of global significance, such as corporate organization and growth, multinational enterprise, business efficiency, entrepreneurship, technological change, finance, marketing, human resource management, professionalization and business culture.

The Journal has won a reputation for academic excellence and has a wide readership amongst management specialists, economists and other social scientists and economic, social, labour and business historians.

Business History: The emerging agenda

The core strategy of Business History is to promote business history as a sui generis scholarly discipline, engaging on an equal footing with mainstream history and the wider social sciences. To achieve this, the Journal will continue to be international, comparative, thematic and theoretically informed. In the post-Chandler world, the agenda for business history is to extend its scale and scope specifically to:

  • widen its international scope: business activities in underrepresented regions, for example Latin America, Africa and Asia
  • go back beyond the 19th and 20th centuries to include ancient, medieval and early modern eras
  • inform the policy agenda; historical examples of regulatory success and failure, nationalisations and privatisations
  • engage with the business and management agendas; entrepreneurship, competitive advantage, corporate governance
  • theoretical development; independent theory or theories of business history

All research articles in this journal are rigorously peer reviewed, based on initial editor screening and anonymized reviewing by at least two referees.

Job Description

We are seeking three Co-Editors to join the Editorial Team to drive the strategy for Business History, working to enhance the impact and reputation of the Journal. The Co-Editors will manage the peer review process for papers assigned to them, recommending high quality papers to publish.

Routledge provide an annual contribution to expenses incurred by the Editorial team.

Key Tasks

The tasks to be undertaken will include but will not be limited to:

  • Working with the Editorial Team, Routledge and the Editorial Board to develop the editorial strategy and direction of Business History and acting as an ambassador for the Journal;
  • Attendance and networking at international conferences and events to promote Business History and solicit submissions, invited contributions, and special issue proposals;
  • Responsibility for enhancing the quality and reputation of Business History, particularly in relation to the quantity, quality and timeliness of published research;
  • Commissioning topical special issues with active, well-respected Guest Editors;
  • Day-to-day manuscript and peer review management including selecting and managing peer reviewers and making recommendations for the final decision on papers assigned to you;
  • Ensuring that all reviewers and authors uphold the Journal’s code of publishing ethics;
  • Working with the Editorial Team to refresh the Editorial Board and pool of reviewers as necessary in terms of subject specialisms and geographical representation;
  • Attending Editorial Team / Editorial Board meetings annually.

Candidate Experience

We are seeking three outstanding and professional academics who are actively involved in the disciplines covered by Business History, with an international reputation for research excellence, and a passion for communication. Prior experience of editing an established journal is preferred, but not essential.

Applicants should be actively involved in networks within the field. Key qualities sought for the positions include energy, enthusiasm, managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle, an understanding of research and publishing ethics, and the ability to meet deadlines and work effectively with Editorial Team members and a major publisher. It is essential for the candidate to:
• Have demonstrable experience, knowledge and understanding of journal publishing evidenced by factors such as being a journal editor, an associate/consultant editor or an editor of special issues of top-quality academic journals.
• Have a world-class research record as evidenced by publications in top-ranked relevant academic journals coupled with other relevant factors

Job Description
• At all times to work closely with the other Editor(s) in Chief, to achieve the job description and objectives set down by the British Academy of Management, and to maintain good communications about all aspects of the journal with the Academy’s Executive Committee and relevant sub-committee. The Editors report to the Vice Chair(s) for Research & Publications
• Develop and implement a strategy to further enhance the position of BJM in the academic community and in relation to other leading management journals, and to obtain support for significant changes in direction from the Academy’s Executive Committee and Research & Publications sub-committee
• Oversee the manuscript commissioning and review processes that include: working with the Co-Editor in Chief and a team of Associate Editors to decide whether to commission special articles and to decide when an article should be accepted for publication; to commission and oversee the production of special issues; to build the reviewer community of the journal
• Work closely with the Managing Editor and the office of the journal to achieve the highest level of performance in the eyes of its stakeholders

The British Academy of Management supports the publication of its high-quality journals for the benefit of its membership and the wider community.

Key Data

The BJM was first published in 1990, under the editorship of Professor Sir Cary Cooper, and is in its 30th Volume. The journal is currently jointly edited by Professors Geoffrey Wood and Pawan Budhwar, who both reach the end of their terms of office in December 2019. Its international reputation has grown rapidly in recent years and its 2017 impact factor stands at 3.059, placing BJM 39th (out of 140) for business journals and 54th (out of 209) for management journals.
Overview BJM is the flagship journal of the British Academy of Management. It provides an excellent outlet for research and scholarship on management-related themes and topics. It publishes articles which are of a multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and internationally significant nature, and which are committed to making a positive social impact through thoughtful scholarship. BJM complements the other publications produced by the British Academy of Management and is deliberately targeted at a wide readership interested in business and management. The journal publishes authoritative literature surveys and reviews. These address the intellectual and academic needs of the broad academic management community both in the UK and on a wider global scale.
The journal receives in excess of 400 manuscripts a year (this has increased substantially under the current editors) and the average time for first decisions (which is accept, revise & resubmit, or reject after a first round of review) is 80 days. The average time for desk rejection is 7 days.
BJM is part of the Academy’s growing portfolio of journals which includes the International Journal of Management Reviews. It publishes four or five issues a year. The Co-Editors-in-Chief sit on BAM’s Council and so make a significant contribution to its broader communication / publishing strategy. In addition, they make an important contribution to the annual September conference.
The selection of the Co-Editors-in-Chief will be made by the Academy’s Research and Publications Committee and the persons appointed will be expected to work closely with that Committee in developing the future strategy of the journal.

The British Academy of Management
The British Academy of Management was founded in 1986 and is the leading community for management scholars. The organisation has a current membership of approximately 2000 individuals, about 20% of whom are internationally based. The Academy provides a variety of training and development workshops and programmes for academics at various stages of their career. A 3-day annual conference and 1-day Doctoral Symposium are also held in September at various locations within the UK. E&S: SI on Histories of Business and Inequality


Enterprise and Society: The International Journal of Business History is seeking expressions of interest from teams wishing to act as Guest Editors of a Special Issue of the journal on ‘Histories of Business and Inequality.’ This issue will be the first in a new initiative recently announced by Enterprise and Society and Cambridge University Press. This initiative adds a fifth issue to the four published annually by the journal since it was founded in 2000. The new fifth issue, which will be published online, is designed to significantly enhance the reach and impact of business history by creating a space in which to explore inter-disciplinary dialogue and address very large scale problems in ways that are beyond the scope of conventional original research articles and typical thematically focused special issues.
In a significant departure from conventional practice the agenda for this new initiative will be set by the editorial team at Enterprise and Society. We will then seek bids from editorial teams able to show that they can take that agenda and shape it in creative ways that will enhance interdisciplinary dialogue within and beyond the fields of business history and history, leading to important and impactful new insights. The initiative aims to generate not only highly original new research but also, more importantly, bold and ambitious synthetic articles exploring the issue at hand in provocative ways. Successful editorial teams will be given an opportunity to organize a supporting workshop to be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Business History Conference, on whose behalf Enterprise and Society is published. It is anticipated that the first issue of this initiative will be published in 2020. Please see below for further details of the proposed timeline.

Histories of Business and Inequality

Inequality – economic, social, and cultural – has been a feature of human societies for
millennia. Today, inequality, both within and between societies, is viewed as problematic. Governments and supranational institutions seek to develop policies aimed at the elimination or amelioration of inequality. Has inequality always been viewed as problematic and why is it viewed as problematic today? Critically, how has the relationship between inequality and business enterprises and activities been viewed over time and across societies? Has business been viewed as being responsible for causing inequality? Has it been viewed as having a responsibility to reduce inequality? Can we write histories of business and inequality? What conceptual and methodological challenges would such histories of business and inequality involve? By business we include private organizations of many types—corporations, families, partnerships, business groups, financial, industrial, trading and merchant enterprises, as well as
state owned enterprise and business in non-capitalist societies.


We seek expressions of interest from outstanding editorial teams. Bids will be assessed on their ability to fulfill the remit of the Special Issue. That ability will be assessed according to both the composition of the editorial team and how they propose to shape and address the chosen theme. Both should be aimed at ensuring interdisciplinary dialogue and scholarship and bold thinking.
Editorial teams must be comprised of a minimum of two individuals and must be
interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinarity is defined as least one member from beyond the field of business history, broadly defined. Team members may be drawn from the wider field of history or other cognate fields of study. International teams will be viewed favorably, as will teams combining established and emerging scholars. Alongside a description of the proposed editorial team, proposals should include a short
document (maximum of two pages, single spaced) outlining how the team proposes to shape and address the theme. The section above in this document outlining the theme of ‘Histories of Business and Inequality’ contains questions that are intended to be indicative only. Proposals should show creativity and initiative in the shaping and addressing the theme of Histories of Business and Inequality. In this respect, the main criteria will be the potential for generating interdisciplinary dialogue and fresh perspectives. This document will form the basis of the successful team’s subsequent Call for Papers. Proposals suggesting a variety of article formats will be welcomed.
It is important to stress that though published online all articles accepted for publication in the Special Issue will be subject to the same peer review and editorial processes as articles appearing in the regular print issues. They will also be produced and formatted to identical standards as those in regular print issues. Articles appearing in the Special Issue will be Enterprise and Society articles in every sense.
